Discipleship is Spirit-led. We are guided and motivated by God’s Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-25 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit."
Without the Holy Spirit leading us, discipleship is “of the flesh” and based on our human effort alone. This produces a mindset of sin management and behavior modification. Becoming more like Jesus comes only by the empowering, leading, convicting and guiding power of God’s Spirit.
When we rely on the Holy Spirit, we can expect to see the fruit of the Spirit abound in our life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
