Wise Words

Jul 27, 2025    Allen Smith

We have all heard the old children’s rhyme dating back to 1830: “Stick and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Every generation since has had an obsession to recycle this little ditty and minimize the impact of other people’s words. The Boomers had the 70s rock band, The Who, sing this saying in a B-side song called “The Quiet One,” while Gen X-ers listened to Madonna’s repeat it in "Like It or Not.” Millennials bopped their heads to Katy Perry’s anthem “Part of Me” while Gen Z heard the hip hop artist, Juice WRLD, eerily tell them that “the drugs won’t hurt me” just one year before he died from a pill overdose. As we close our mini-series this Sunday on the Book of Proverbs, we’ll explore what God says about the impact of our words. I hope to see you there!
